Overnight & Extended Pet Care

Everything you need to know about arranging safe, comfortable overnight and extended care for your pet while you're away in Poland.

Your pet is safe while you travel

Whether you're heading abroad for business, taking a family holiday, or working in another city for a few days, making proper care arrangements for your pet should give you peace of mind — not stress.

Poland has a growing pet care community, with a range of options available for dogs, cats, and other animals. This guide walks you through what to consider when planning an overnight or extended stay for your pet, what questions to ask potential carers, and how to prepare your animal for time away from home.

Types of overnight pet care in Poland

Understanding the available options helps you choose what's right for your pet's temperament, needs, and your budget.

Home Boarding

Your pet stays in a carer's home rather than a facility. This is ideal for pets that thrive in home environments and prefer personal attention. Often a good option for social dogs.

Pet Hotels & Kennels

Dedicated facilities offering overnight stays, often with structured routines, exercise schedules, and staff on-site at all times. Good for pets that do well around other animals.

In-Home Pet Sitting

A trusted carer comes to your home to care for your pet in their familiar environment. Ideal for anxious animals or those with specific routines or medical needs.

How to prepare your pet for overnight care

1

Visit the carer or facility in advance

Before the stay, arrange a meet-and-greet with the carer or a tour of the facility. This allows your pet to familiarise themselves with the environment and reduces anxiety during the actual stay.

2

Prepare a pet care document

Write down your pet's daily routine, feeding schedule, medication (if any), emergency contacts, and your vet's details. A clear handover document ensures consistent care.

3

Pack comfort items

Send familiar items with your pet — a favourite blanket, toy, or item of your clothing can significantly reduce stress by providing familiar scents from home.

4

Ensure vaccinations are up to date

Most reputable kennels and home boarding carers in Poland require current vaccination records. Ensure your pet's rabies, distemper, and other relevant vaccines are current before the stay.

5

Confirm emergency procedures

Discuss with your carer exactly what should happen if your pet becomes unwell. Who is the carer's preferred vet? Are you reachable, and if not, who has authority to authorise treatment?

Tip for First-Time Arrangements

If possible, do a "trial night" before your main trip. A one-night stay lets your pet get used to the new environment and gives you confidence in the carer before a longer absence.

Questions to ask a pet carer

Before entrusting anyone with your pet, make sure you ask the right questions.

  • How many animals will you be caring for simultaneously?
  • Are you able to administer medication if needed?
  • What is your daily routine and exercise schedule?
  • Which veterinary clinic do you use in an emergency?
  • Do you have first aid training for animals?
  • Can you provide references from previous clients?
  • Will my pet be left alone, and for how long each day?
  • Are other pets in the household vaccinated?
  • How and how often will you update me on my pet?
  • What is your cancellation policy?

When you're away for longer periods

For extended stays — two weeks or more — additional planning is essential to ensure your pet's physical and emotional wellbeing.

  • Arrange regular video or photo updates from the carer
  • Pre-authorise veterinary care with a financial limit
  • Leave sufficient food supply and any medications
  • Designate a local emergency contact who can step in
  • Ensure your pet's microchip details are current

Common questions about overnight pet care

It depends on your dog's temperament. Social, adaptable dogs often enjoy both environments. Anxious or elderly dogs may prefer the quieter, one-on-one attention of home boarding. Kennel facilities can be excellent for dogs that enjoy structured routines and the company of other dogs.
Most reputable kennels and carers in Poland require dogs to be vaccinated against rabies, distemper, parvovirus, and hepatitis, and cats against cat flu and feline enteritis. Some may also require kennel cough vaccination for dogs. Always check specific requirements with your chosen facility.
For peak periods such as summer holidays, Christmas, and Easter, booking 4–8 weeks in advance is strongly recommended as reputable carers fill up quickly. For off-peak travel, 2–3 weeks' notice is usually sufficient, though earlier is always better.
Shy cats often do best with in-home care, where a sitter visits your home daily or stays overnight. This keeps your cat in their familiar environment, reducing stress significantly. If you must use a cattery, look for one that offers individual suites away from dogs and high traffic areas.
Always inform the carer about any medications well in advance. Provide clear written instructions including dosage, timing, and administration method. Most experienced carers are comfortable with common medications such as tablets and drops, but confirm their capability before booking if your pet has complex medical needs.
